IELTS WRITING TASK 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The charts below show the number of working hours per week in the industrial sector in four European countries in 2002.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where necessary.

Write at least 150 words

Para.1: Opening

The graphs illustrate the weekly working time in an industrial area in France, Denmark, Sweden, and the UK in the year of 2002.

Para.2: Overview:

S1. Common comparison: Big proportions (31-40) >< Small proportions (others)

S2. Biggest proportion: France (31-33) >< Others: (34-40)

=> Overall, the 31-40-hour group was more popular than the other groups. Especially, the majority of people spent 31-33 hours working per week meanwhile the 34-40-hour working time was the dominant in the other nations.

Para.3: Body 1 (Big proportions)

=> Looking in more detail at the bar charts, we can see that up to 80% of the Swess  went to work for 34-40 hours a week, whose second rank belonged to Denmark at 70%. The figure in the UK accounted for a half and this was still higher than that in France. In the over 30 hours, France reached the peak in excess of 50% whereas only 10% in Britain fell into this category. The rate of Swess workers with rather than 30 working hours was almost 40%, which was 15% higher than that in Denmark.

Para.4: Body 2 (Small proportions)

=> The number of people who worked fewer 30 hours per week in all of the places was under 20%. The same is true for the groups of over 41 hours in France, Denmark, and the UK, but the total for the UK was slightly higher. Differently, the data for 41-45 hours in Sweden was quite considerable with 30% whilst the fewest did the jobs for over 46 hours.
